Mini-ITX board uses server-class chipset for mission critical applications
The Thunderbird-E3100 uses Intel's server chipset 3100 to support up to 8 gigabytes registered ECC RAM, thus lending itself especially for usage in mission critical applications.
The Thunderbird-E3100 combines the Intel Core 2 Duo processor with the Intel 3100 chipset. This chipset unites server-class memory and IO controller functions in a single integrated circuit. For the first time, this makes such functions available for embedded systems.They make the Thunderbird-E3100 especially suited for communications and storage devices.

The use of error correcting RAM greatly improves reliabilty. The two available DIMM slots hold up to 8 GB registered ECC RAM.
Graphical applications take advantage from the on-board graphics controller with its own 16 MB graphics memory. A VGA adapter allows display panels with up to 1600 x 1200 pixels.
Hard disks can be connected using the six fast, AHCI capable, SATA ports.
As for interfaces, the Thunderbird-E3100 comes with six USB 2.0 and two flexibly configurable serial ports. There are two LAN interfaces with Gigabit Ethernet. One of the LAN ports handles remote computers control via ASF (Alert Standard Format). This allows to operate a system eihter in-band or out-of-band, using standard network connections.
The Thunderbird-E3100 is extendable using the two PCI Express slots provided. These can hold standard PCIe x4 cards. Additionally, there is a PCIe MiniCard slot on-board, which allows, for instance, usage of commercially available WLAN cards.
Like all other new developments from LiPPERT, the Thunderbird-E3100 comes with an integrated micro controller that implements LiPPERT Enhanced Management Technology (LEMT) functionality. These functions comprise housekeeping things like power sequencing, as well as application support functions like write/delete protected flash memory and various state counters for condition monitoring.
The Thunderbird-E3100 runs Windows XP, Windows XP Embedded, Windows Server 2003, and Linux, either the 32 or 64 bit versions.
