PCI/104-Express Embedded Graphics Processor Board

Digital signage and gaming applications profit from LiPPERT’s 104X-E4690. The PCI/104-Express board uses an ATI Radeon™ E4690 graphics processor, adding unprecedented graphics performance to embedded PC appliances.

Embedded PC applications now have one more graphics option: Germany-based LiPPERT Embedded Computers created a small 3.78” by 3.55”, PCI/104-Express formatted graphics processor board, the 104X-E4690. The board is equipped with an ATI Radeon™ E4690, which delivers more than double of the performance compared with previously available graphics processors. Built using an advanced 55 nanometer chip technology, this processor features a dynamic power management that depends on the required graphics performance. As a result, its power requirements scale with the performance, which in turn results in comparatively low energy consumption.

The graphics processor sports 512 MB GDDR3 RAM, 320 shader processing units, an AVIVO display engine, and a full 30 bit display pipeline. It also supports stream computing, and can thus relieve the system’s main processor from tedious, number crunching parallel processes.

Support for DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.0, OpenGL 3.x, OpenCL (2H09), and hardware acceleration for Motion Video Decode in H.264, VC-1, MPEG2 standards, make the E4690 compatible with today’s graphics oriented programs. An also integrated Azalia HD Audio controller provides excellent sound for the application.

The 104X-E4690 comes with 2 DisplayPort connectors and dual channel LVDS interfaces and provides the supply voltage for backlighting. It can be integrated with PCI/104-Express CPU boards using the PCI Express bus. For compatibility with PCI/104, a standard PCI/104 connector routes all signals through to the peripheral board next to it in the PC/104 stack.

The graphics controller can be cooled using either an active cooling fan or a passive heat spreader with provision to mount a heat pipe system, as the application requires it. The board draws its power supply from the PCI/104-Express bus and doesn’t require an additional supply.

LiPPERT offers the 104X-E4690 for operation in standard and industrial operating temperature ranges.
