The new product targets strategic mission-critical systems. This means applications having high requirements for non-stop operation reliability (24/7), extreme ambient temperatures and temperature variations, as well as abnormal shock and vibration durability, are more easily and reliably developed. The EPIC Express formatted embedded PC places its processor and chipset on the board’s bottom side, allowing simple construction of stacked systems that consist of more than one board. The EPIC standard places the extension connectors on the top of the PCB; thus, peripheral extension boards are often a hindrance when mounting cooling devices on the same side. Unlike other boards that are difficult to cool when daughter boards are used, the Hurricane-QM57’s construction allows the cooling device to be simply attached. The Hurricane-QM57 comes with a maximum of 4 GB soldered down DDR3 ECC memory. Using a specially designed Rugged SODIMM module, (RSOMM) it can be expanded to a total of 8 GB. RSOMM modules use a robust connector and are tightened by screws, compared to standard SODIMM modules’ rather flimsy edge connectors and snap-in mounts. The embedded PC is specified for the standard temperature range of -20°C to +60°C. Models qualified for the extended temperature range of -40°C to +85°C are optionally available. A suitable heat spreader comes with the board. The mechanical precautions and qualifications make the Hurricane-QM57 especially well suited for computer and server systems that need to operate in severe environmental conditions. This is underlined by the comparatively low power consumption, for which the used Intel Core i7 processor is mainly responsible. Fabricated using an advanced 32 nanometer process, it allows much higher clock frequencies, while, at the same time, power consumption is significantly reduced. The Intel Core i7 processor support Hyper Threading and features an integrated graphics processor. LiPPERT combines this processor with the Mobile Intel QM57 Chipset that already comprises many interfaces. The Hurricane-QM57 sports 2 Gigabit LAN ports, 10 USB ports, 4 RAID capable SATA ports, as well as audio and video connections. The latter are realized as modern DisplayPort interfaces, which use digital transmission to achieve better display quality. PCIe MiniCard slot, PCI Express x16 and x1 Lanes are available for extensions. The board features an LPC debug port, Flash BIOS, and a system management controller running LiPPERT Enhanced Management Technology features (LEMT). These not only take care of internal housekeeping but also provide functionality to the application. Among these are things like secure Flash area and supervision functions. Various operational status counters serve remote condition management.
